To be honest, any new flashy phones from any manufacturer comes with a very unattractive price tags without any telco plans. Apple has a flashy campaign with even more hype and publicity from journalists. Thus they are a much bigger target to bash.

S$2000 is a hype price, as there no “typical” street price due to lack of legit iPhone “unlocked” price for reference. iPhone is very much a “label” status gadget, much like an over-priced LV bag that works the same like an Espirit bag.

Siao, for that price, I’d rather buy 2 GTX 280s (about S$1600 given current prices)…not that I play many PC games these days, but hey, at least you know you’re paying for power.

Personally, I won’t pay more than $900 for any iPhone, and only when the capacity reaches 32GB to fit all my songs in.

There’re more than a few telcos that have not kept to the US$199 subsidised price, and I’m not at all surprised. Apple’s main aim is to sell as many iphones as possible, and if that means letting a telco decide their own price, of course they’ll go with it. The promises are really all marketing speak.

Did I say US$199 was the unsubsidised price?

But neither did Apple! Check out their site (http://www.apple.com/iphone/). The US$199 price comes with an asterisk which refers to small print that says it comes with an AT&T plan…

That’s the thing about Apple campaigns – when the talk was that it was “half the price, twice as fast”, it’s actually only “cheaper” when subsidised, “faster” when NOT compared to the rest of the phones out there which already got 3.5G long ago…

Nice phone, to be honest. But even nicer ad campaign.
