$143 MS Office 2007 – is it really a discount?

Microsoft Singapore is giving a 43 per cent discount on Office 2007 Home and Student edition so you can now get it for $143. The software giant issued a press release on this hailing it as a special 43rd National Day discount for Singapore.

But I checked online and Microsoft’s website shows it is going for US$109. So is there really a special discount for Singapore’s birthday? Or is it just a National Day marketing gimmick to commemorate worldwide pric cuts on MS Office?

    I thought it was super obvious where to get it, despite MS not putting it in the press release….

    You have to go to Microsoft’s Office to buy Microsoft Office : )

    I just received a SingPost National Day promotion brochure in the mail that has this offer listed. There’s a form you can fill up to buy, or go to http://shop.vpost.com.sg. Still, it’s strange that Microsoft didn’t mention where people can get the stuff in their press release.

    That’s great news for anyone who badly needs perfect MS Office compatibility, and kudos to Microsoft for giving people less excuse to pirate. Unreasonable pricing is the primary justification for piracy. Adobe made a similarly intelligent move with its Photoshop Elements software.

    Of course, if budget’s your true concern, the open-source OpenOffice 3 is completely free (latest beta’s here; official release should be before year’s end: http://download.openoffice.org/3.0beta) and has docx compatibility and some startlingly nifty PDF features.

    And the open-source GIMPshop (http://www.gimpshop.com) really gives you everything you need in an image editor unless you need CMYK/pre-press functionality (unless you’re in a professional production environment, you don’t).
