If the original PadFone was a sort of concept device, the followup from Asus that recently started shipping in Singapore is certainly a much more polished phone-cum-tablet.

Asus is cutting the price of its small Android tablet, the Nexus 7, in Singapore at the Sitex show from tomorrow, as it tries to reflect the lower prices for the device in the United States.

The 16GB version will go for S$349, while a new 32GB version will cost S$399, which was what the lower capacity version was sold for previously in Singapore. However, there is no news yet of a 3G version unveiled in the US weeks ago.

If you are looking to place a few monitors side by side for work or gaming, one interesting option is Asus’ new Designo MX screens, which promise a “frameless” display.

Well, actually the there is a frame still, but the bezel is just 0.8mm thick, so it’s great if you want to trick your eyes into thinking your two or more monitors provide a single, seamless digital portrait.

If you are not into the Windows 8 convertible bandwagon, you’d be happy to know that Asus has come up with a followup to its Android PadFone transform device that switches from a phone to a tablet.

The PadFone 2 is essentially an Android smartphone with a 4.7-inch screen, which can be docked to a station that transforms it into a 10.1-inch tablet.

Folks who use it for heavy duty surfing or video streaming will welcome the ability to tap on the 4G or Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks that are just out in Singapore.

After much fanfare in the past couple of weeks, the first convertibles, hybrids and touch-screen ultrabooks running on Windows 8 have finally started arriving in stores everywhere.

Just how practical are they and really, what everyday benefits would you get from going with touch screens that swivel or slide to transform into a tablet?

What machine would you buy if, for example, you will be hanging around at public events most of the time but still need to keep up to date on news reports or fire away e-mails easily while on the go?

Here are five devices we feel will make a difference for folks who want both portability and performance.

When I was loaned a review unit to test out last week, I wasn’t too sure of the Asus VivoTab RT.

Here was a stripped down version of Windows 8 and a tablet that had few of the apps that users have been used to on an iPad or Android tablet.

Yet, after a few days with the Windows RT tablet, I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised at the build quality and value it offers.

Asus laid open its Windows 8 cards on Wednesday, as it joined the mad rush to push out as many new tablets, laptops and hybrids as possible with the new operating system’s launch.

Among the many touch-screen laptops, slide-out tablets and even a dual-screen laptop cum tablet, we’ve managed to pick out three that warrant a closer look. If you are looking for a new tablet or laptop, then the VivoTab Smart, Zenbook Touch and Taichi should definitely be on your radar.
