Dell XPS 14

Those who still think that Dell puts out boring machines should check out its latest XPS 14 ultrabook just unveiled on Tuesday in Singapore.

Weighing in at 2.1kg, it comes with a 14-inch screen that nicely straddles between a smaller 13-inch ultrabook and a 15-incher for workstations. It’s a machine that seems to be built for both portability and as a replacement for a desktop PC. And Dell’s promising up to 11 hours of battery life with this new ultrabook.

What if you’re making a thin-and-light laptop that’s just shy of Intel’s ultrabook standard? You come up with another easy-to-remember marketing name, of course! And that’s just what HP has done with its new “Sleekbook”, laptops that look, er, sleek.

Available in 14-inch and 15.6-inch varieties, these Sleekbooks are Envy-branded, and each has its own ultrabook counterpart, adding up to a total of four new Envy notebooks: the Envy Sleekbook and Envy ultrabook with 14-inch screens, and the Envy Sleekbook and Envy ultrabook with 15.6-inch screens.

Unless you’ve been living in the deep recesses of a Linux terminal somewhere in Antarctica, you would know that Apple has released the newest version of their operating system, OS X Lion, ahead of schedule. But it’s not Lion in which I’m interested.

Along with new software comes new hardware, and Apple has upgraded the MacBook Air to become more powerful than before. They’ll be phasing out the iconic white MacBook a little down the road. For all intents and purposes, the MacBook Air is now Apple’s most consumer-ish offering.
