Geek buy: Corsair Force GT

If you had asked just six months ago if you should buy a solid state drive (SSD) for your PC, I’d have said “only if you are using it for a laptop.”

Besides the pure speed of an SSD, the low power consumption, light weight and durability mean that SSDs are a perfect fit in portable machine. So much of our data is stored on the cloud now, be it e-mail or music, that we don’t need all that space onboard after all. There’s always an external hard disk you can call on if you need storage.

So, what about desktops then? Well, I used to think they can do with a hard disk.

But having used SSDs in all the laptops at home now, I have to say, once you get used to the speed of SSDs, it’s hard to go back to hard disks. And that’s what I did this past weekend – I finally relented and bought a Corsair Force GT for my desktop PC.

If you must absolutely have the fastest storage device around for home use, you’d be happy to hear that the OCZ Revodrive 3 solid state drive (SSD) is coming to Singapore.

We just got word that the latest version of the PCI Express-based drive – yes, the chips are mounted on a card – is coming to Singapore via the local distributor Ban Leong Technologies. Limited numbers of the 240GB version are going for a hefty S$899, though you can expect discounts on the street.

Unless you’ve been living in the deep recesses of a Linux terminal somewhere in Antarctica, you would know that Apple has released the newest version of their operating system, OS X Lion, ahead of schedule. But it’s not Lion in which I’m interested.

Along with new software comes new hardware, and Apple has upgraded the MacBook Air to become more powerful than before. They’ll be phasing out the iconic white MacBook a little down the road. For all intents and purposes, the MacBook Air is now Apple’s most consumer-ish offering.

So you’ve just bought your laptop and want to swap out the hard disk for a speedy solid state drive (SSD) instead? This is usually a straightforward task thanks to the modular designs these days, like on the Apple MacBook Pro and fortunately, the HP Envy 14 I had just bought recently.

But some things still need to be taken care of to ensure everything runs smooth with your speedy new drive. Here’s a guide to install an SSD into your new HP Envy 14.

(Disclaimer: Techgoondu is not responsible for any damage or loss of warranty to your laptop!)

Shopping for a professional thin and light laptop in Singapore? There are a few deals worth checking out at the IT Show bazaar happening now at Suntec City.

Most interesting are a number of new models sporting Intel’s new energy-efficient and faster Sandybridge technology unveiled in the past couple of months. Also worth checking out are slightly older Core i5 and Core i7 models that are now going at attractive prices to make way for the newer designs.
