Google Chrome became the world’s top browser last Sunday, thanks to users in India, Russia and Brazil who turned to Chrome over other browsers to get online, according to web analytics firm StatCounter. That honour was short-lived, however, when netizens returned to Internet Explorer (IE) dominated workplaces the next day.

“While it is only one day, this is a milestone,” said Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter in a statement Wednesday, adding that Chrome still faces a battle to unseat rivals such as IE and Firefox in countries like China, United States and Germany. StatCounter based its numbers on some 15 billion page views per month (4 billion from the US) from its network of over three million sites.

As mobile technology continues to converge, manufacturers are trying to provide us with the one device which can cater to all our mobile media needs. Incorporating a dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB or RAM, an excellent quarter HD (960 x 540) screen, and the ability to transform into a quasi-netbook in an instant, the Motorola Atrix is certainly taking steps in the right direction.

But how will this first-of-its-kind product hold up under our scrutiny? Will it set a new trend, or falter in a few months? We took it for a spin to see if it’s true to its promise.

IE9 might have seen great reception, but Microsoft is not resting on its laurels. On top of previewing new Windows Phone 7 features at MIX 2011, the company also announced the platform preview of Internet Explorer 10. Yes, your copy of IE9 is so last month; IE10 is the place to be!

Last week was an interesting week in the browser wars.

Besides Microsoft’s promotion of its IE9 beta, Mozilla also made a splash at SingTel’s cloud-themed regional Accelerate event, where Mozilla’s chairman Mitchell Baker helmed a keynote.

Techgoondu had the chance to to do a 1-on-1 interview with Mitchell last Wednesday, and we discussed IE 9 beta and the future of Mozilla.

Talking to Mitchell was a treat: The rare candid top-level tech executive who minced no words and could articulate a clear vision.

IE9 beta geek verdict: Not bad, surprisingly

Two browsers opened one after another, both running the same web application. One browser was IE9 beta, and it sped breezily along as it ran the speed read test at Microsoft’s IE Testdrive site.

The other browser was Firefox’s 4 Beta 6, and in comparison it crawled.

The whole point of this experiment was to showcase to the assembled crowd of journalists and bloggers — of which I was one such attendee — that Microsoft’s IE9 beta was superior. Microsoft wanted to tout its new IE9 beta — unveiled globally on 15th September last week — at a sit-down session with the media early this week.
