Ever wondered if those airport X-ray machines can truly decipher every lurking threat? Or how phishing scams slither into our smartphones, hijacking them for nefarious deeds?

These are among the issues and cutting-edge vulnerability exploitation techniques that will be demonstrated and discussed at GeekCon 2024 International Cybersecurity Contest and Conference.

“As we live in a fast evolving digital world, it is important to know more about how cybersecurity works and the ways risks can be minimised to protect our personal information and data,” said Dr Catherine Wu, secretary general of GeekCon International, who is organising the event.

Attendees will be able to watch demonstrations that would unveil real-world vulnerability exploitation threats. Security researchers would be also be discussing and recreating real-world attacks to disclose security risks in AI and Web 3 sectors.

They will also be able to witness how cyber experts unravel vulnerabilities in 30-minute tech sharing sessions including five minutes of demonstrations and live hacks.

These may include unique security research findings, cutting-edge defence and mitigation techniques, new applications, tools, solutions, and findings on sophisticated cyberespionage campaigns.

Dr Wu added that GeekCon’s offensive defence approach to cybersecurity could enable organisations to resolve security issues.

In past GeekCon events, the experts’ contributions have identified thousands of severe vulnerabilities, which have helped hundreds of technology companies such as Google, Apple, Tesla, Samsung, Huawei, DJI, Xiaomi, and Amazon to address security flaws, she added.

GeekCon was created by the independent security research institute Dark Navy, which is based in China. It is the world’s first security geek contest and conference dedicated to pioneering research and discovery via cyber adversarial events. To date, there have been 15 international GeekCon events.

In Singapore, the two-day event starting May 25 will be attended by prominent practitioners, researchers and white hat hackers from the cybersecurity world.

There will be about 50 speakers from various organisations and cybersecurity labs from Google, Kaspersky Nanyang Technological University, Tsinghua University and others.

The topics they cover include blockchain, AI, smart devices and electric vehicles.  About 1,500 attendee are expected at the event.
