It left a bad taste in my mouth.

Apparently, over 95 percent of people who watched the Singaporean-ized rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” for our upcoming National Day Parade 2011 thought so too, and disliked it.

Here’s the song in all its glory, and it has been making its rounds virally on twitter and Facebook today:

“…I want a biscuit and I want a sweet. You and me, let’s share this treat…”

Nope, this isn’t a tongue-in-cheek, so-bad-it-is-good parody (unfortunately), but a song that is going to be sung on National Day this coming August 9th on… (drumsrolls please) funpacks. Yes, we have an entire song about the goodie bag you will receive if you’re at the parade this year.

Some choice quotes on Twitter today:

Oh yea saw @ladygaga ‘s tweet she’s coming to Sg. She should listen to our NDP funpack song. Prob she’ll nvr come back ever.

i just heard the funpack NDP song. It was as if my ears were gang-raped. Repeatedly.

Please la, don’t we have any better songs than this meh!?

For example, last year’s excellent “Song for Singapore” by Corrine May.

Or even the unofficial songs by Mr Brown Show. 2009’s Lekuasemi was classic, but my favourite is their 2008 Love Song for Singapore.

At turns hilarious, insightful, and beautifully sentimental on why we love Singapore.

*Update*

Just released on YouTube on 4th July, the official 2011 national day song is “In a heartbeat” by Sylvia Ratonel, Singapore Idol’s 3rd season runner-up. No preachiness, featuring an interracial love story, this is a beautiful song. Watch.

On the Funpack song itself, given the negative publicity and legal ramifications, it looks like it might be yanked.

@Gg. Agreed. Still, the Gaga rip-off of Bad Romance is worse than than the horrible YOG song (and we thought nothing could top that).

You’re singing about funpacks and kopi-o. What in the world?!?

So where are the brains in the organising committee? Is there a lack of talent from the way that the lyrics are written? Also the one who approved the bad lyrics is a complete retard for not knowing the copyright rules. The song is as bad as the youth olympic song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_7g-kFRD1E

Both totally irritating, annoying and cringeworthy.
