Dell has acquired AppAssure, a backup and recovery software specialist, in a bid to beef up its software and storage portfolio.

The latest acquisition by the world’s third largest PC maker comes after the company formed a new software division under former CA head honcho John Swainson earlier this month. The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

AppAssure’s recovery software lets businesses back up data and applications from corporate servers to data centres and the cloud. It also supports backup and recovery of virtual servers, including VMware, Hyper-V and XenServer, as well as physical servers.

The company reported 194 percent revenue growth year-on-year in 2011 and 19 consecutive quarters of growth. It is also one of the fastest-growing backup and replication software company in the United States.

“The acquisition is clearly aligned with our strategy of finding best-in-class technologies in rapidly growing areas of our business,” said David Mehok, Dell’s executive director of investor relations, in a blog post Friday.

“Dell can accelerate profitable growth of AppAssure solutions through the distribution, scale and financial strength that we provide,” he noted.

Mehok added that AppAssure’s products are also easy to use and manage, and are well aligned with Dell’s mid-market design focus.

Dell plans to keep AppAssure’s 230 employees and will continue to invest in additional engineering and sales capability to grow this business.

According to IDC, the data protection and recovery industry is expected to grow 7 percent a year through 2015.
