Beware of the Facebook colour scam

If you’ve received event invitations or seen pictures posted by friends on Facebook with links that claim to let you change the background colour of your profile, it is most likely a scam.

According to IT security firm Sophos, such links may redirect users to a page that claims to allow Facebook users to switch the background colour of their profiles from blue to black, pink and other colours by participating in an online survey.

But behind the scenes, there’s a good chance that scammers are earning money by luring unsuspecting users to complete the survey without delivering the colour change.

Despite the similarity of this latest Facebook scam to previous scams, users excited by the prospect of changing the look and feel of their profile pages may fall prey to the scam, said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, in a recent blog post.

So, if you think you’ve fallen for the scam by clicking on similar links, remove all related messages, photos and ‘likes’ from your Facebook account. Also, revoke authorisation and publishing rights from the rogue app and report it as spam to Facebook.
