Surface_RT_26

Months after it first appeared in American stores, the much-talked about Microsoft Surface RT finally made it to Singapore over the weekend.

It’s a first for a couple of things. It’s the debut tablet from Microsoft and it uses the first Microsoft operating system made just for tablets - Windows RT.

In the end, the Surface RT is just going to split opinions. It’s got so much going for it, yet it is limiting in ways that can be frustrating.

Microsoft Surface RT

Singapore users will finally get their hands on the Microsoft Surface, though only on the less powerful “RT” version, when the company starts shipping its much-touted tablet in more countries this month.

The first Windows tablets from Microsoft, the Surface RT and more powerful Surface Pro, had been positioned as alternatives to Apple’s iPad and rival Android tablets when they went on sale in the United States in October last year.

VivoTab RT 3G

Remember that Windows RT tablet that Asus was showing off at the end of last year? Well, there’s a 3G version of the VivoTab RT now in Singapore and it’s started selling on Wednesday for S$1,049.

It’s not bad a deal, considering it’s just S$100 more than the Wi-Fi only version that went for S$949 at launch. With 3G, you will be able to connect on the go without worrying about Wi-Fi hotspots not working when you need them the most.

When I was loaned a review unit to test out last week, I wasn’t too sure of the Asus VivoTab RT.

Here was a stripped down version of Windows 8 and a tablet that had few of the apps that users have been used to on an iPad or Android tablet.

Yet, after a few days with the Windows RT tablet, I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised at the build quality and value it offers.
