Sharp increase in external hard disk prices at IT Show 2012

It looks like hard disk drive (HDD) manufacturers have yet to recover from the damage caused by last year’s monsoon floods in Thailand. Instead of year-on-year prices falling as we’ve come to expect, vendors are asking for higher prices for hard disks at this year’s IT Show.

Whether you’re hunting for Western Digital, Toshiba, or Seagate branded HDDs, prices are generally up across the board.

Asus and Acer may have been slightly earlier to the game, but the battle for the slimmest, lightest and most powerful laptop is just getting hotter with new arrivals like Toshiba’s new Portege Z830.

Shown to the media in Singapore last week, the latest in the Japanese laptop maker’s thin-and-light Portege line is just 15.9mm thin and weighs a feather-light 1.12kg. On that frame are a 13.3-inch screen and 128GB solid state drive, along with either an Intel Core i5 or Core i7 chip.

A big thank you to all readers who participated in our Toshiba AS100 tablet Techgoondu Giveaway contest.

Like our previous contests, all winners were chosen by a democratic vote of the goondus.

We received close to 200 submissions, but unfortunately we’ve got to whittle the field down to pick our winners.

Congratulations to our winner Mr Lim Chee Wee from Queenstown, who is now the proud owner of the AS100 tablet.
