The Nokia Lumia 900, the Windows Phone camp’s best smartphone to date, is coming to Singapore on May 26 and will go for a rather attractive S$849 at retailers as well as via all three mobile operators here.

Commentary: What now for Nokia and Windows Phone?

Over the weekend, against the advice of many, I bought my dad a Nokia Lumia 800.

I know, not many phone buffs are giving Windows Phone devices much chance after a somewhat disappointing holiday season last year, when the Finnish cellphone maker was estimated to have sold a modest million or so Lumia phones.

But it is a little early to write off Windows Phone devices, and they can still go places, if only they can get some traction. My dad had bought an LG Optimus 7 a couple of years ago and it had provided a nice, easy way to join the smartphone bandwagon with the operating system’s tile-based system.

The Lumia 800 was thus a natural upgrade. Again, the large tiles make for easy navigation. The updated Windows Phone 7.5 provides for multi-tasking. The interface is fast, and the 8-meg camera, based on Carl-Zeiss optics, is no slouch.

Indeed, folks like my dad are the type of users that Microsoft and Nokia need to convince, even as many reviewers and techies glowingly praise both Windows Phone and Nokia’s Lumia range, including the latest Lumia 900 shipping in the United States this weekend.

In case, you needed any proof that white is the “it” colour for phones today, Nokia has come up with the snow-coloured version of its flagship Lumia 800 to add to its cyan, fuchsia and black options.

The phone will sport the same “pillow” of a screen that has impressed – indeed surprised – many users, as part of an attractive sales pitch that also includes a nifty Windows Phone interface.

Like its other variants, the white Lumia 800 comes with a handy 8-meg camera and has a pretty impressive AMOLED screen that boasts some of the best contrasts on a small screen (read review).

Nokia outs 808 PureView 41-meg camera phone

No, that’s not a typo.

The Finnish phone maker has taken quite a number of people by surprise by unveiling a phone, sorry, camera, that boasts a sensor capable of 41 megapixels of detail and actually runs on Symbian Belle, just when many have expected the dated OS to be sent into the sunset for retirement.

The 808 PureView, revealed just moments ago at the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona, uses Carl-Zeiss optics and promises enough resolution for folks who prefer to carry around a phone rather than a traditional point and shoot camera.

Today’s unveiling by HTC and Nokia at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) should send shivers down the spines of Windows Phone fans all over the world.

For starters, the long-rumoured Nokia Lumia 900 is finally a reality, and it’s every bit as awesome as I had imagined. The new Nokia flagship smartphone features a 4.3-inch ClearBlack AMOLED display (800 x 480), a 1.4GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage. No word on whether there will be other storage options, and 16GB just seems so 2008.

At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference this week, Apple unveiled iOS 5, the latest update to their mobile operating system. The update brings some interesting and long-awaited features to the iPhone and iPad. Strangely enough, although many of these features are blatant copies of existing functionality on other platforms, almost the entire blogosphere is falling over in praise for iOS 5.

Nokia E7: nice hardware but troubled by timing

Having been in the spotlight these past two weeks for getting in bed with Microsoft, Nokia faced some hard questions on its product roadmap yesterday in Singapore, where it launched a business smartphone that sported the now-unfavoured Symbian operating system.

Just how would Nokia position the new E7, now that newer Windows Phone devices would be out in the coming months? Would the software onboard be updated over time? Just how good is the phone itself?
