Here come the gold phones for Lunar New Year

HTC One_Gold_2V

Cometh the hour, cometh the gold phone.

With Lunar New Year just around the corner, gold-coloured phones are the latest to cater to a seemingly Chinese penchant for gold-themed stuff during the festive season.

HTC’s popular One phone, for example, is getting a gold-coloured wraparound in time for the new year. Almost a year old now, the device will cost S$768 and be out in Singapore on January 18.

The Taiwanese phone maker promises an Android 4.4 “KitKat” software update and says the phone will work with its Sense 5.5 software add-on that is in its new models.

Other than that, however, there’s the same 4.7-inch Full HD screen and excellent UltraPixel camera, which we reviewed back in March 2013.

HTC will hope that gold sells well after a year that saw bigger screens, in the form of, say, Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3, dominate the market.

LG G2 Gold

Besides HTC, LG has also come up with a gold-coloured phone this season. The Korean phone maker’s top-end G2 phone will come in gold, as well as red, for S$898.

Out from January 18 as well, the special edition G2 will feature the same hardware as before. This includes a handy 13-meg camera and a button at the back for easily navigating the 5.2-inch Full HD screen.

Finally, there’s no forgetting Apple’s gold-themed iPhone 5s, of course. The popular model costs S$998 for a basic 16GB version and goes up to an expensive S$1,288 for a 64GB version. If you’re buying a gift for an Apple fan, this could be your new year-themed present.

Think these phones are cheesy? Well, at least, none of them comes with a dragon or a fake piece of jade.
