The mysterious disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight 370 was the hottest topic that Singapore users searched for on Google this year, according to the online search giant.

It said today that the term “MH370” was looked up five times as much as the top local term – “PSI Singapore” – for users here.

These “trending” searches, released today, reflect hot topics that are topmost on the minds of online users in Singapore and around the world.

In a year that saw not one but two tragic incidents involving Malaysian Airlines planes, the flight MH17 lost over Ukrainian airspace was another item close to the hearts of Singapore users. The flight was the fourth highest trending search of the year.

Together, the two flights were also the most searched for in terms of trending international news items that Singapore users looked up.

This was followed by the ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) disease that was publicised through the ice bucket challenges earlier in the year, as well as Ebola, which devastated villages in Africa.

Among the trending events that Singapore users looked up online, the World Cup unsurprisingly came up tops in the football-mad country. Next came the IT bazaar Comex, then Asian Games and the IT Show.

And the top trending gadget that Google users in Singapore were looking for? It’s the Apple iPhone 6, followed by the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, then the Galaxy S5 and the iPhone 6 Plus.
