Singtel users can now pay S$9.90 a month to triple their mobile data bundle, with a new add-on plan unveiled by the telecom operator today.

Called DataX3, it is aimed at those who are on its Combo mobile plans. They have to be on the Combo 2 plan at the least to enjoy the offer.

A user on this plan paying S$42.90 a month and enjoying 2GB of data can boost his data allowance to 6GB by adding S$9.90 and bringing the month cost to S$52.80. He will still have 200 minutes and 1,000 SMSes to use.

The add-on offer will come in handy for folks who don’t want to change their existing plans too much, except to top up their data options. Earlier this year, Singtel had introduced a similar DataX2 plan, giving more flexibility to existing customers.

The options are the latest aimed at wooing users, who already can pick from SIM card-only plans that promise lower monthly subscriptions as well as flexible plans that allow them to customise how many minutes or gigabytes of data they need each month.

Competition has stiffened in the Singapore market in the past year, with a fourth telco expected to enter the fray as early as next year. Early this month, three players came forward to formally indicate their interest to be the new entrant.

One of them, MyRepublic, has already targeted heavy data users in an apparent bid to win over users who are unhappy with the free data bundles offered by incumbents.

And Circles.Life, a virtual operator that leases its network from M1, has promised to offer flexible top-ups for users who run out of free data each month.
